The consistency of image quality is achieved through a blend of line scanning cameras and speed synchronization. The system does not take a picture but takes the image of the underside of the vehicle line by line and stitches it together to create a full image without motion blurring. Speed sensors are employed to detect the actual speed of the moving vehicle, which allows the system to synchronize its imaging at a constant speed to ensure uniform image quality even if the vehicle travels at a slow or slightly higher speed.
Reviewing scans that have been taken previously must be very straightforward and quick. This is because many scanning systems use photographs, which have been taken, together with the following data: Date and time of scanning; Lane through which the car went; and License plate number. All an operator will need to do is input either the license plate number or specify a time period to get the past scans done within a few seconds. Another important feature of this reviewing software is the capability to compare two photos.
The capacity of storage space required will depend on the quality of the image, traffic, and the duration for keeping records. Typically, the scanners used in under-vehicle systems create high-quality images, which could occupy between 2 MB to 10 MB of space. Inspecting even several hundred cars a day can mean several gigabytes in storage each day, meaning terabytes for weeks or months. The majority of the software uses servers for storage or network video recorder/cloud storage services, making expansion easy as required.
Generally, undercarriage inspections produce images that are very sharp and detailed enough to be visually inspected. In modern scanning inspection machines, images of the entire underside of a passing car are produced using line-scan cameras and appropriate lighting technology. This enables one to view the structural composition, components, foreign substances, and alterations on the underside of a vehicle with ease. Some modern systems even come with features that automatically enhance images to make them clearer and more visible, especially when imaging at night.
A vehicle scan typically takes just a few seconds, depending on the system and vehicle speed. In most under-vehicle inspection systems, scanning is done in real time as the vehicle moves over the scanning unit, so there’s no need for a complete stop. High-speed cameras capture detailed images instantly, and the system processes them within seconds to display results to the operator. For stationary checks, the process may take slightly longer, but it remains very quick. In practical use, this fast scanning ensures smooth traffic flow without compromising security checks.
